Temporary number or a rented one? How to pick

A temporary number and a rented number solve different problems. Here's a plain guide to which one fits what you're doing.

People message us asking which option to buy, and the honest answer is: it depends on one thing, how long you need the number to keep working.

A temporary number is for a single moment. You're signing up somewhere, a code needs to arrive, you copy it, and you're done. The number stays live for a short window, long enough to catch that one message. It's the cheapest way in, and most people never need anything more. If you're just getting past a one-time verification, this is it.

A rented number is for when the story continues. Some accounts text you again later, a login from a new device, a password reset, a confirmation weeks down the line. If you'll need to receive messages on the same number more than once, renting keeps it yours for as long as you hold it, with incoming SMS the whole time. Think of it as a temporary number that doesn't expire the moment you look away.

A simple way to decide: if losing the number after one code would be annoying, rent. If you'd never think about it again, go temporary.

Two more things worth knowing. Price scales with time, so a temporary activation costs a fraction of a rental, and you shouldn't overpay for time you won't use. And availability shifts by country and service, so if one combination is thin, another usually isn't.

Still unsure? Start with a temporary number. It's low commitment, and if you find yourself coming back for the same service, that's your sign to rent next time.
